ECB euro reference rates, via Frankfurter
Third-partyIn developmentThe European Central Bank’s daily euro foreign exchange reference rates, read through the Frankfurter API. Used for one series: how many rupiah one US dollar buys.
Methodology
The ECB sets its reference rates once per TARGET working day, around 16:00 CET, from a regular concertation between central banks. They are published for information only; the ECB states they are not transaction rates. The ECB publishes rates against the euro; the US dollar to rupiah figure is a cross rate Frankfurter computes from the euro to rupiah and euro to dollar figures.

Collection approach
One request per run to the documented Frankfurter v2 endpoint /rates with base=USD, quotes=IDR and providers=ecb, covering roughly the last 400 days. providers=ecb is required: without it, v2 blends about thirty central banks into one figure, and the result would no longer be covered by the ECB’s terms alone. No key, no cookies, and the shared rate-limited HTTP client.
Method: Machine-readable data feed
Feasibility findings
Measured 10 October 2026
- Access mechanism
- Documented public APIA public API with published documentation and a contract we can rely on.
- Credentials
- Not required for the endpoints measured.
- Collection risk
- Automated access appears permitted and the mechanism is stable.
- Automated access
- api.frankfurter.dev/robots.txt (read 2026-10-10): "User-agent: * / Allow: /". Responses carry x-robots-tag: noindex, which asks search engines not to index them and says nothing against API use.
- Historical depth
- ECB reference rates against the rupiah from 1999. The connector keeps about 400 days, enough for a 30-day comparison and a three-month sparkline.
- Collection permission
- Established. The publisher’s published terms permit reuse of these figures, on conditions this site meets, such as naming the source. No separate permission was requested. Read the terms.
This is an engineering feasibility assessment, not legal advice. No authentication or access control was bypassed to produce it, and where terms could not be established the risk is recorded as unknown rather than assumed favourable.
Known limitations
- A reference rate for information, not a rate any bank or money changer will give you.
- The dollar figure is a cross rate computed from two euro rates, not a rate quoted against the dollar.
- Published on ECB working days only; weekends and European holidays have no figure.
- Frankfurter is a community-run service; if it stops, the same figures are available from the ECB directly.
